Welcome & acknowledgement

Welcome to the Shaare Zedek Cancer Pain and Palliative Medicine Reference Database.

This is provided as a public service, in conjunction with the support of an unrestricted educational grant from Purdue Pharma.

This is a searchable database of over 30,000 references related to Cancer Pain and Palliative Care. The database was developed and is maintained by Dr. Nathan Cherny, who is the Director of the Cancer Pain and Palliative Care Service in the Oncology Department at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem .

The database provides you with an unrivalled gateway to the medical literature pertaining to all aspects of Pain and Palliative Care. We hope it will be of use to all clinicians and researchers working in this field.

Importantly, the database is also available as 2 EndNote® reference manager files for use on your personal computer. Used with the refence manager software "EndNote®", you can use the database for writing and research. A free trial version of this software is available at: http://www.endnote.com/

Message from Nathan Cherny

The explosion of medical knowledge has made it impossible for any one individual to keep abreast of all the latest developments. The literature regarding Cancer Pain and Palliative Care is characterized by its phenomenal diversity. In 1989 I was inspired by one of my mentors, Dr Jeff Szer, to develop a database of the Cancer Pain and Palliative Care literature in a format that was searchable on my personal computer (then a Mac Plus) and which could be integrated with a reference manager to facilitate writing with automated reference formatting.

Using Endnote and then Endnote Plus, I have accumulated this database over the past 12 years. It has been a wonderful hobby and learning experience. Today the database is an essential work tool in the care of my patients, in my research, and in my medical writing.

If it helped me so much, I thought that others in the field could benefit from access to it. The feedback from colleagues with whom I have shared the database convinced me that every clinician working in the field could benefit from access to this tool.

As an educator, I am committed to help spread knowledge. It is in this spirit that I am very grateful to Purdue Pharma, who have provided me with the opportunity to share this with you.

I hope that it will be of help.

Take care

Nathan I Cherny.

This database project is dedicated to my most important mentors, my parents: Betty Cherny and Jack Cherny, who taught me about curiosity, compassion, communication, conscientiousness, care, and the value of sharing.
